Why is my medical history investigated before cosmetic surgery?

Why do MYA need to know about my mental health and medical history?

At your initial consultation you will be required to declare your medical history in a medical questionnaire. Withholding any medical information will be detrimental to your health and safety should you decide to proceed with surgery.

Your pre-operative assessment with the clinic nurse is carried out a minimum of 4 weeks prior to surgery. They will go into further detail of any previous procedures, medication and if you have been under a psychiatrist, psychologist or specialist care over the past 3 years. Your nurse will then send a letter to both your GP and psychiatrist/psychologist/specialist (if applicable) making them aware of the planned procedure. Should they be aware of any medical history or clinical contraindications, this could affect MYA's decision to proceed with your surgery. We request a response within 21 days of the procedure date. Delays with NHS practices are common so patients are advised to assist in the process to speed up GP responses.

GPs and specialists can be known to charge to this information and costs vary from practice to practice (if at all). This cost is not covered by MYA so we advise you discuss this with your GP prior to booking. MYA will not operate on patients who refuse to give MYA consent to inform their GP of the operation.
