Why do my breasts fall to the side when I lay down?

All breasts naturally fall to the sides when you lay on your back, particularly if they are larger. Gravity causes breasts to fall downwards naturally, so when lying in a horizontal position, it’s perfectly normal for your breasts to fall to the sides.

What causes breasts to sag?

Breast ‘ptosis’ which is the medical term for the sagging of the breasts is common among women and factors such as your genes, weight loss and pregnancy can all cause increased sagging to occur.

As we age, our skin loses elasticity and doesn’t hold its shape, sudden fluctuations in weight can cause the skin to stretch and droop. Breastfeeding babies and the hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy may also impact breast ptosis.

Over exposure to UV rays can also affect the elasticity of your skin, contributing to skin ageing and sagging. We recommend that patients always use a high factor sun cream and avoid using sunbeds.

Does breast surgery improve breast sagging?

Breast Uplift also known as an Uplift or Mastopexy procedure elevates ptosis (sagging) of the breasts. Typically, MYA surgeons would recommend a breast uplift with implants (augmented mastopexy) to patients who present with ptosis and are looking to achieve a fuller, uplifted breast shape.

A mastopexy only procedure, is often recommended to patients who don’t want breast implants, have excess breast tissue and are looking to achieve an uplifted breast shape to alleviate ptosis.
