When can I use bio oil after surgery?

At what stage can I use Bio Oil after surgery?

After surgery, everyone heals at different rates but typically it takes 6-8 weeks for incisions to fully heal. In rare cases it can take longer. There are several factors that affect wound healing and scar maturation: 

• The amount of melanin in the skin  

• Genetic family components 

• Age 

• Diet and nutrition 

• Quality of the skin and tissue where surgery has been performed 

If you have more than one incision following surgery, each incision goes through the stages of healing independently and therefore scar outcomes may be different or appear inconsistent when comparing one scar to another. 

In your first 6-8 weeks following surgery, it is advised not to apply any lotions or oil to the scars, unless advised by your surgeon or healthcare team at MYA, to avoid any healing complications. Maintaining a healthy balanced diet, keeping your wounds dry and clean and avoiding direct sunlight to the affected area are key factors that contribute to healthy wound healing and recovery.  

 Does Bio Oil help to reduce scarring? 

Bio oil is a great way to help minimise the signs of scarring following surgery, but it’s important to listen to your surgeon’s advice on when to use it as this may vary depending on the procedure you've had. 

Once you’ve been given the all-clear by your surgeon to use bio oil, make sure you massage it carefully in a circular motion until it’s fully absorbed. Apply it regularly, usually twice a day for three months or more. Results vary from person to person.
