Mummy makeover surgery
Here at MYA, we understand the demands of motherhood and the toll pregnancy can have on the body. Exercise and diet can play a part in restoring the postpartum body, but there are some physical changes that are resistant to these methods.
The natural changes that occur following pregnancy and breastfeeding are typically centred around the breasts and abdomen. Following childbirth, patients may experience weight gain, loose excess skin, breast ptosis (sagging), stretch marks, or a c-section overhang or c-section scarring. Some women may also experience the separation of abdomen muscles or excess and asymmetrical labia skin following vaginal childbirth.
To transform a postpartum body, many women choose to have cosmetic surgery - this can tighten, enhance, and improve the look of different areas of the body, including the breasts, abdomen, and labia.
Mummy makeover surgery is gaining popularity in the UK. Whilst adding to a patient’s general comfort, a mummy makeover can prove very beneficial and have a positive impact on a patient’s self-esteem.
What’s included in a mummy makeover?
Mummy makeover surgery is a unique offering that caters to a variety of changes women experience post-pregnancy.
It’s not a ‘one size fits all’ procedure. It typically includes a combination of the below procedures, tailored to the individual’s body shape and the desired outcome.
Breast Enlargement – Breasts may lose volume following breastfeeding and pregnancy. If skin quality is good and the breasts haven’t dropped, a breast enlargement involves using breast implants to enhance the shape and size of the breasts.
Breast Uplift – Hormone changes during pregnancy and volume changes in breasts during breastfeeding can cause breasts to drop below their pre-pregnancy position. If the lower pole of the breast and/or the nipple placement has dropped, then a breast uplift procedure is often recommended. This procedure lifts sagging breasts by correcting the shape and size of the breasts, and realigning the nipples. Many patients choose to combine this procedure with a breast enlargement to replace volume lost during pregnancy and/or breastfeeding.
Implant Removal & Reaugmentation – Those who have had a breast enlargement in the past may notice that their implants aren’t sitting how they used to post-pregnancy. In this instance, a breast implant removal and reaugmentation is recommended. This procedure involves removing the current implants, repairing the breast pocket, and replacing it with new breast implants. If the breasts dropped during pregnancy or breastfeeding, the procedure may be performed in conjunction with a breast uplift.
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) – Some women’s bodies never fully recover from the abdominal growth during pregnancy. Skin quality, lifestyle choices (e.g. smoking, diet, sun exposure), and genetics all have a part to play in the amount of excess skin that remains following pregnancy. Some women may have a C-section overhang or ‘shelf’ following surgery, while some don’t. A postpartum tummy tuck removes loose excess skin and fat from the stomach, tightening the skin over the muscles to create a flatter abdomen. This procedure is often combined with liposuction to help further sculpt the body.
Fat Removal (Liposuction) – The female body naturally gains additional weight during pregnancy to provide energy to breastfeed following childbirth. Some women gain more than others, and sometimes excess fat is hard to reduce after giving birth. Liposuction surgery reshapes areas of the body by removing fat deposits from beneath the skin.
Labiaplasty – The labia minora often has increased blood flow during pregnancy and childbirth, with most women experiencing temporary swelling as a result. As the skin is elastic, it often retracts back to its normal size following childbirth, but sometimes the labia can remain stretched. A labiaplasty procedure reduces the amount of excess tissue around the labia minora, creating a more symmetrical and neater appearance.
Depending on the surgeon’s recommendations, the procedure may be carried out in 1 or 2 stages. More information can be found about the predicted length of your procedure during the consultation process.

The key benefit of a mummy makeover is speed. In most cases, we will aim to complete the combination of surgeries in just one day, so you don’t have to go in and out of surgery and heal at different rates.
At your consultation, your MYA surgeon will give you more information and recommend the best treatment plan for you, along with predicted healing times.
Mummy makeover recovery and aftercare
The recovery time for mummy makeover surgery is dependent on the procedures you have done.
For the majority of cosmetic surgery procedures available in a mummy makeover, the initial recovery period is 6-8 weeks - after this, you can go back to work and start exercising again.
Whether you’ve had a postpartum breast augmentation, a postpartum tummy tuck, or a combination of surgeries, it’s important to take your time. Getting used to your new body can take a different amount of time for each patient, so don’t worry if you’re not feeling up for a workout or social event straight after you’ve been signed off by your surgeon.

We also require our patients meet our surgical criteria and be fit and healthy for surgery, this includes being within a certain clinical BMI range.
