When researching cosmetic surgery there are a lot of factors you need to consider before you go ahead and book. To help make your research a little bit easier, we put the most frequently asked questions regarding breast implants and pregnancy to a MYA expert.

Should I remove my breast implants before pregnancy?

No, you do not need to remove your breast implants before pregnancy. Having implants in during pregnancy is not a concern and having them removed is not medically necessary. However, if you are wanting to remove the implants for personal reasons then that is completely up to you.

Will my implants sag after pregnancy?

Sagging breasts is always a risk of pregnancy whether you have breast implants or not. Having implants does not increase your risk of sagging breasts with pregnancy either.

During hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy your breasts will increase and decrease in size over time, which will cause some degree of breast sagging.

However, for those with implants the benefit is that there will be less breast deflation after pregnancy as the implant itself does not change size.

Can you breastfeed with implants?

A common concern for many women who are considering breast implants, is whether they will be able to breastfeed after their surgery. Patients who are undergoing a straightforward breast enlargement procedure, should be able to breastfeed successfully with no issues.

Breast implants shouldn’t prevent the patient from breastfeeding or impacts a woman’s ability to produce milk. Patients will also be able to use a breast pump as normal.

What impact will pregnancy have on my breast implants?

Pregnancy does not directly impact the implants itself however, it is normal for your breasts to change during and after pregnancy. stretch marks and sagging can affect the breasts through pregnancy.

Will I need a lift after pregnancy?

It is common for breasts to lose their firmness and sag after pregnancy due to hormonal changes. Depending on how your body changes you may feel that you need a breast lift after pregnancy to help with confidence post baby. Not all women experience sagging after pregnancy and some women are comfortable with their post-pregnancy body without wanting surgery. 

However, if you are considering a breast uplift after having a baby, please note that you will need to wait 6 months after giving birth or after breastfeeding, before you can have the surgery.

Can I get implants after I’ve given birth?

Yes, you can get breast implants after giving birth. It is recommended you wait 6 months after giving birth or after breastfeeding before you can have breast surgery. This is to make sure your breasts are fully recovered and settled into their final shape.
