What is rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty (or nose job) is the process of refining the nose in line with the patient’s desired look.
There are two types of rhinoplasty techniques. Your surgeon will determine whether you require open or closed rhinoplasty based on your physical requirements.
Open rhinoplasty - a small incision is made on either side of the nostrils to elevate the skin and access the inside of the nose.
Closed rhinoplasty - no external incisions are conducted and the surgery is performed from inside the nostrils.
The width of the nostrils can be adjusted (alar base reduction) and a deviated septum can be corrected (septo rhinoplasty) as part of rhinoplasty surgery.
Rhinoplasty surgery is often done for cosmetic reasons, such as removing bumps or altering the shape when a patient feels like it’s not in proportion with the rest of their features. However, it can also be performed for those who struggle to breathe, snore, or have a deviated septum.
How a nose job changes the way you look
Being the central feature of the face, changing the shape and size of the nose can completely alter the way someone looks.
During a rhinoplasty, the cartilage and bones inside of the nose are modified, which can drastically affect the outer appearance. For many patients, rhinoplasty means a more symmetrical structure is created, which, in turn, makes the face appear more youthful.
The impacts of rhinoplasty
A nose job doesn’t just change the way you look - it can completely alter your way of life, both mentally and physically. The initial recovery period is 6-8 weeks, but it can take up to 12 months to fully heal, and within this timeframe, patients can experience a whole heap of emotions.
During the recovery period, it’s important that you keep the end goal in mind.
Your new nose can help with confidence, speed up makeup application (no more tedious contouring), and make breathing easier.
Bruising and swelling are completely normal and will go down over time, with most noticing reduced effects after around 2 weeks.
When healing from a cosmetic surgery procedure, it’s important to remember that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. When you first get your cast off, your nose will appear swollen and you might not see the final result straight away. It can take up to one year for a rhinoplasty to fully heal and settle into position.
It’s important to attend every post-op appointment at your local MYA clinical hub - this way, our team can monitor your healing and clear up any of your concerns.
Lifestyle changes after a nose job
To make sure your new nose heals, there are a few temporary changes to be aware of.
You will be advised not to:
Wear glasses or sunglasses for up to 6 months post-op
Blow your nose for 6 weeks
Sleep face down
Fly, swim, or take part in any physical sport or exercise for at least 8 weeks post-op
Lift heavy items
Another thing to be aware of is that sneezing after rhinoplasty may cause discomfort, and in some cases, mild pain. This is completely normal and shouldn’t affect the new shape and structure of your nose, but if you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your MYA nurse.
All required changes in your life will be discussed prior to the procedure, and again during your aftercare appointments. We advise you to stick by these until advised otherwise by your surgeon for the most effective result.
How much does a nose job cost?
Like all cosmetic surgery procedures, the cost is dependent on the patient, their needs, and their current nasal structure. The starting cost for rhinoplasty with MYA is £6,995.
At your surgeon consultation, you will be given a fixed price based on your individual requirements. We also offer finance options so you can pay for your new nose in a way that suits you.
