Deviated septum causes
For a lot of people, a deviated septum is a result of fetal development complications or due to an injury during childbirth. For others, it can be caused by a later injury (often during contact sports), which knocks the nasal septum out of place.
Deviated septum symptoms
Those with a nasal septum deviation often experience difficulty breathing, which can have a knock-on effect on how well they sleep, often leading to sleep apnea.
They are also more at risk of developing frequent sinus infections due to complications with sinus drainage.
It's common for those with a deviated septum to have facial pain due to nasal obstruction a misaligned septum.
Ear, nose and throat specialists often recommend nasal steroid sprays as deviated septum treatment, but a surgical procedure can not only correct crooked nasal bones but can greatly reduce symptoms that come with having a deviated septum.
What is septoplasty?
Septoplasty (also known as deviated septum surgery) is a cosmetic surgery procedure that corrects the septum and nasal passages and reduces the problems associated with a deviated septum.
Deviated nasal septum surgery involves repositioning the middle of the nose (the septum) by removing and reinserting the cartilage or nasal bone (or both) to correct and improve the shape.
Here at MYA, we offer surgery to fix a deviated septum as part of a rhinoplasty procedure
Septoplasty benefits
Having nose surgery comes with a range of benefits, including an increase in confidence and an overall balance in facial features.
However, with septoplasty surgery, the key benefit is an improvement in breathing and a reduction in congestion.
By straightening out a deviated septum and correcting the size of the nasal passage, patients notice that they can sleep a lot better (due to improved breathing) and no longer snore (or snore less severely).
Deviated septum surgery can also reduce the likelihood of developing infections in the long term, as the sinuses can drain properly - say goodbye to a stuffy or runny nose.
How much does septoplasty cost?
Here at MYA, septorhinoplasty is performed as part of a rhinoplasty procedure. The cost of septoplasty surgery starts at £8,995.
However, septoplasty costs can differ depending on the patient's requirements and what they'd like to achieve with the surgery.
Costs can also change if the patient wants additional changes made to their nose, such as an alar base reduction or the removal of lumps along the bridge.
How long does it take to recover from a septoplasty?
The initial recovery period of septorhinoplasty surgery is 6-8 weeks. During this time, bruising will reduce, swelling will subside, and the new shape of the nose will start to become more visible.
Septorhinoplasty recovery looks different for everyone, which is why it's vital for patients to attend their post-op appointments with their MYA nurse so their healing can be monitored and any splints can be removed.
Patients are advised to take 1-2 weeks off work, depending on how physically demanding their job is. They should also avoid strenuous exercises - such as HIIT workouts and contact sports - until advised by their surgeon to limit swelling and blood clots.
Scarring after a nasal septoplasty depends on the surgeon and their techniques. The possibility of scarring will be discussed during the consultation process, so you know what to expect post-op.
