What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty (also known as eyelid surgery or eye bag removal), is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes the excess skin and fat from the upper or lower lids (or both).
The procedure takes between 1-2 hours and, in most cases, you can leave the same day once discharged by your surgeon.
Blepharoplasty surgery is done under general or local anaesthetic. The surgeon will make incisions along the natural lines of your eyelids before removing excess fat and skin. The eyelids are then stitched back together.
How much is blepharoplasty?
The starting cost of eyelid surgery is £4,695.
This can vary from patient to patient, as it depends on their individual needs. For example, while some patients only require upper eyelid surgery, some undergo double eyelid surgery.

Do I need blepharoplasty?
Ageing around the eyes is natural and can cause wrinkles and excess skin on the upper and lower eyelids.
Whilst lifestyle factors like smoking and drinking alcohol can accelerate the visible signs of ageing, saggy and droopy eyelids are often down to genetics. It can cause low self-esteem, discomfort and vision problems.
Many of our patients have come to us after trying non-surgical treatments and topical creams. Whilst they may provide a temporary change, blepharoplasty surgery is a long-term solution that completely transforms a patient’s facial structure, offering a more rejuvenated eye area.
If you struggle with low confidence and difficulty with your vision because of excess fat and skin around the eye area, eyelid surgery could be the answer.
What to expect after eyelid surgery?
In the first few weeks after eye bag removal surgery, you can expect your eye area to feel tight and swollen, with some bruising. This should subside after approximately 21 days, with any pain lasting 7-14 days on average.
After the 6-week recovery period, you can expect to look fully rejuvenated, younger and more awake, giving you a boost in confidence.
Aside from the mental benefits, blepharoplasty can correct visual impairments and reduce discomfort.
During this timeframe, it’s important to attend any post-op appointments - this allows our MYA nurses to check that you’re healing correctly and gives you the chance to answer any questions regarding aftercare.
It takes around 6 months for the swelling to go down fully and the eyelids to settle.
