What is breast ptosis?
Breast ptosis is when the breast tissue sags over the natural breast crease, often causing an uneven breast shape.
Many women notice that their breasts fall down when they lay down. This is common and is often a sign of ptosis in the breasts.
While it's not a medical concern, if the breast sags or a patient has lower breast tissue, it can cause chafing and discomfort as well as low self-esteem due to reduced breast volume and overall asymmetry.
Causes of breast ptosis
Breast sagging is caused by a number of factors, but is usually down to genetic factors, weight loss or weight gain, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and ageing.
Weight changes
Fluctuations in weight and breast size cause the skin to stretch and droop over time, changing the breast appearance.
Ageing
As we get older, the breast skin (and the rest of the body) loses elasticity, meaning they don't hold their shape like they used to.
Hormonal changes
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, puberty, and menopause can all change the way your breasts look. A lot of women experience breast sagging after giving birth, losing the weight they've gained during pregnancy.
The grades of breast ptosis
The degree of ptosis is measured by how much the breast sags over the natural breast crease.
It ranges from mild ptosis to moderate ptosis to severe ptosis.

How a breast augmentation can help
When it comes to breast ptosis correction, breast lift surgery will be your new best friend.
Also known as mastopexy surgery, a breast uplift helps those with sagging breasts achieve a more uplifted and youthful chest.
For patients who have sagging breasts as a result of weight loss, the chest can often look smaller after a breast lift. To create a fuller look, additional breast surgery will be required.
Using breast implants, the size and shape of the natural breast tissue are increased, providing more volume and symmetry.
It's common for the nipple position to change after breast lift surgery - but don't worry, our plastic surgeons can reposition it for a natural-looking result.
Benefits of breast lift surgery
Having a breast lift to treat breast sagging comes with a range of benefits, including:
With a more symmetrical and full chest, buying clothes, bras, and swimwear is often made easier, as patients don't have to cater for uneven breast tissue or shape.
