Breast Implants with MYA
Breast implants are used to enhance the natural breast tissue by adding fullness and volume, achieving a larger breast size. Our specialist MYA surgeons will recommend the best breast implants for you based on your physical requirements during your surgeon consultation.
Why do people get breast implants?
Cosmetic surgery procedures such as breast enlargements (boob jobs) are growing in popularity in the UK, MYA have helped 1000’s of happy patients in their cosmetic surgery journey.
Typically, patients who are considering breast implants are seeking a larger breast size but may also wish to enhance the shape and symmetry of their breasts. Breast implants can lead to increased confidence, improved self-esteem and a better quality of life for many patients.
Over or under the muscle implants
When you meet with your surgeon to discuss breast implants, they will explain the different implant options that are available to you; this will include size, shape, projection and placement.
Implant placement refers to where the breast implant is placed during breast surgery, there are three implant placement options to consider for your breast augmentation:
Subglandular Placement
Often referred to as ‘overs’ is where the breast implant is placed in front of the muscle and behind the breast tissue.
Over the muscle implant placement can be less painful than other implant placements, meaning a shorter recovery time and is often a popular choice for patients who have enough natural breast tissue to cover the implant fully.
Subfascial Placement (also known as partial)
Often referred to as ‘partial’ is where the breast implant is placed between the connective tissue (fascia) and the muscle.
Partial placement can help to reduce the risk of rippling, and prevent the appearance of a prominent profile. The muscle movement over the implant helps to soften the profile of the implant.
Submuscular Placement
Often referred to as ‘unders’ is where the breast implant is placed under the muscle.
This is typically the placement of choice for slender women, or those with little natural breast tissue to cover the implants. Under the muscle placement helps to reduce the risk of rippling, the risk of capsular contracture and helps to provide a smoother contour from the clavicle to the nipple.
The disadvantage of this placement is that the breast area may be more painful following surgery and recovery can take longer. You may also be asked to wear a breast band post-operatively to assist the implants settling into the pockets.
See the below diagram detailing the different implant placements.
Which implant is right for me?
When planning a breast augmentation lots of patients worry about which implants to choose. Researching breast implants is a great place to start, so that you have a better understanding of your options when you meet with your surgeon.
Your expert MYA surgeon will examine you, then take your measurements, they will also ask you to discuss your concerns and what you would like to achieve with breast surgery. Once they have all the information required, they will recommend the best implants and placement for your desired outcome.
It is important to listen to your surgeon's advice when it comes to implant placement and remember that they are experts in their field and their recommendations are tailored to you.
Every patient is different and so is their cosmetic surgery journey. So, 300cc implants in one patient, may look completely different in another patient due to many different factors, like, their existing breast tissue and their physical shape and frame.

Do implants over the muscle look bigger?
The implant placement doesn’t typically impact the size of the breasts, this is determined by the implant size which is measured in cubic centimetres (cc).
Initially over the muscle implants may appear bigger than if you were to have under the muscle implants, however, this is temporary and mainly due to swelling and the implants sitting high on the chest following breast surgery. Over time as the implants begin to drop and fluff and settle into the breast pocket the swelling should subside.
Under the muscle implants usually take longer to heal, therefore the drop and fluff process can take longer. Once the under the muscle implants have dropped and fluffed, the breast size should appear the same size as over the muscle implants.
It is important to remember that implants look different in every patient and are an enhanced version of your natural breast.
