Do Breast Implants Have a Sell By Date?

In an ideal world, we would love breast implants to last a lifetime but unfortunately this is not the case. Implants can change over time due to fluctuation in weight, aging and pregnancy.

These fluctuations in weight, result in the look and feel of breast implants to change, which causes patients to want their implants replacing. This procedure is called “Removal and Re-augmentation”. In very few cases, implants need to be replaced due to low risk complications such as capsular contracture (the hardening of scar tissue around the implant) or rupture. This risk can occur in less than 1% of breast enlargement patients.

The average life span of a breast implant

No implants are made with the intention that they will need replacing as they are manufactured and tested to the highest quality, however, the majority of surgeons would advise replacement every 10 -25 years. If patients are not experiencing problems with the implant then there is no need to replace them. MYA are more than happy to have a clinic nurse or surgeon check implants every few years for reassurance. As well as this, Mentor, our implant supplier, offers a warranty program that provides a lifetime product replacement and limited financial assistance if needed.

Celebrity cases

Even celebrities whose assets have made them famous have openly discussed the changes their body has made causing them to want a re-augmentation. Katie Price was asked if she would have more cosmetic surgery, to which she replied “I will do my boobs again…They were literally amazing but 3 month later I’m pregnant. I think I’ll go a little smaller this time and go pert”. After her baby Bunny was born, it was revealed in the Daily Record that she plans to sell her implants for charity and have a new pair by Christmas. Most people are happy with a tin of Quality Street and a pair of novelty socks!

Christine McGuiness, model and wife of comedian Paddy McGuiness, is another celeb that has publically discussed her re-augmentation procedure. Following the birth of her twins Leo and Penelope, born the 2nd July 2013, Christine had to work hard to get her fabulous figure back but was unhappy with the look of her breasts following her pregnancy. On the 14th June 2014 Christine underwent a removal and re-augmentation with MYA. A removal and re-augmentation procedure is slightly different to a straightforward breast enlargement. The surgeon will re-enter the same scar, remove the implant, clean out scar tissue and then repair the previous pocket (if necessary) before inserting the new implant. The new implant could be larger or smaller than the original, depending on the patient’s request and surgeon’s advice. Christine is over the moon with her results and even took part in a MYA photo shoot showing off her amazing post baby body!
