What is liposuction?
Firstly let’s get into what liposuction really is.
Lipo is often thought of as a weight loss technique, but it’s actually a way of removing stubborn areas of fat that can’t be shifted by diet and exercise.
The most common areas people get liposuction is their hips and stomach, but it can also be used on the arms, legs, chin, bum and ankles for a smoother, more contoured appearance.

Traditional liposuction
Traditional liposuction is when small incisions are made in the target area before inserting a suction probe through the fat layer to break up the stubborn areas of fat.
The fat is then removed using a suction pump.
This lipo technique can be used on all parts of the body and can be combined with other cosmetic surgery procedures, like a tummy tuck.
VASER liposuction
VASER liposuction uses ultrasonic waves to loosen fat tissue and liquefy fat cells. The emulsified fat is then sucked out before the area is sculpted using cannulas.
This is one of the least invasive liposuction techniques and has a shorter recovery time, often carried out under local anaesthetic.
Areas of the body that VASER liposuction can be used on include:
Abdomen
Legs
Ankles
Arms
Buttocks
Hips
Back
Microaire liposuction
Also known as power-assisted liposuction, microaire lipo uses a power-assisted cannula which vibrates to break up the fat cells that are then sucked out of the body.
It can be used on all areas of the body but is best suited to precise fat removal.
This lipo technique is usually used on smaller areas like the chin, jawline, inner arms and inner thighs to create definition.
Which liposuction technique is best?
There isn’t necessarily a right or wrong choice when it comes to liposuction, but it helps to take into account your body type and the look you want to achieve.
It also heavily depends on the amount of fat you want to be removed, your medical history and your BMI. These will be discussed during your nurse vitals appointment in the run-up to your procedure.
When you come in for a consultation here at MYA, we’ll talk you through the available liposuction techniques our surgeons can perform, giving you the benefits and risks of each, as well as the differences between the procedures.
Your MYA surgeon will then make a recommendation based on the information you provide.
