Picking your breast implants
When deciding which implants to choose, there are a few factors you need to consider - not just the size, but the shape, too!
As breast implants differ in size, texture, profile, and shape, it’s important to take the time to find the right ones for you. For more information on breast implants, check out our breast implant guide.
During your consultation, your surgeon will carry out a physical examination of your breasts and take measurements. They will then recommend a range of implants that will create the best result for your frame and your desired outcome. You will have the opportunity to try on implant sizers to help you get a feel for the shape, size, and weight of the breast implants before making a decision.
What different shape implants are there?
There are two different shaped implants to choose from: round implants and teardrop implants (sometimes known as anatomical implants). Both implant shapes will add volume to the breasts, but the shape of the implant you choose depends on your desired aesthetic outcome and your pre-surgery physiology.
Your expert MYA surgeon will advise the best treatment plan for you, tailored to your personal requirements.
Round breast implants
Round breast implants are likely to be recommended to patients who are looking to achieve a fuller and more rounded breast shape. Round breast implants are a great option for patients who have a good amount of natural breast tissue to cover the implant. Round implants add volume to both the lower and upper pole of the chest - the upper pole does not normally have much projection without an implant.
Teardrop breast implants
Teardrop breast implants or anatomical breast implants usually have a textured surface and achieve a more contoured appearance. This is closer to a natural breast shape, featuring less volume at the upper pole of the breast and more at the base. Anatomical implants are typically recommended to patients with little natural breast tissue, as well as those who are on the slender side, to prevent the appearance of an overly prominent profile and provide a much smoother contour from the clavicle to the nipple.
Positioning of implants
When it comes to breast augmentation surgery, there are different ways the breast implant can be positioned.
Subfascial - The implant is placed in between the connective tissues of the muscle.
Subglandular - The implant is positioned over the muscle.
Submuscular - Breast implants are positioned under the muscle.
Where your breast implant will be placed depends on the look you want to achieve and your existing breast tissue. Your surgeon will run you through the pros and cons of each and recommend the most suitable option for you during your consultation.
What implants look the most natural?
While submuscular round implants look more natural than subglandular implants, if you’re looking for the most natural results possible, consider a teardrop boob job.
Due to their tapered shape and reduced projection towards the top, teardrop implants produce the most natural-looking results.
If you opt for teardrop implants, you still have the choice of your implant size and projection level. However, they require a textured coating to ensure they stay in place at all times - reducing the likelihood of them moving around.
Teardrop boob job
If you choose to have a teardrop boob job, the process is the same as that of a round implant.
It will take around 1 hour to perform and the initial recovery period will be 6 weeks. For all boob jobs, it takes up to 6 weeks for the breast implants to drop and fluff, and they can continue to settle for 1 year post-op.
