What is Breast Enlargement surgery?
Breast enlargement (often referred to as a boob job) is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the shape and size of the breasts. Our expert breast augmentation surgeons insert implants to achieve a fuller shape and increased volume.
Breast enlargement is one of the most popular breast procedures in the UK and boasts one of the highest patient satisfaction rates in the industry. It can boost confidence, improve self-esteem, and enhance overall quality of life.
Every patient’s reason for choosing breast implants is unique. That’s why, at MYA, we offer a specialist service tailored to your individual needs. From Tubular Breast Correction, asymmetry correction and even Congenital micromastia (underdevelopment of the breast tissue) We’ve helped thousands of happy patients on their breast surgery journey - take your first step today!
Why choose a Breast Enlargement?
Patients considering breast enlargement surgery with implants are typically seeking a larger cup size for one or more of the following reasons:
Their breasts did not develop to their desired size during puberty (congenital micromastia)
To boost self-esteem and body confidence
To enhance their natural shape and achieve a fuller appearance
To restore a loss of volume, shape or firmness following pregnancy, breast feeding or significant weight loss
To correct asymmetry or improve the appearance of tubular breasts
As part of a gender-affirming journey for transgender patients seeking a larger breast size
What Happens During Breast Enlargement Surgery?
Breast enlargement surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour in theatre. Depending on your surgeon’s recommendations and your personal preference, you may be able to return home the same day or stay overnight to recover in one of our MYA hospitals.
A small incision, usually 2-3 inches long. will be made along the breast crease to insert the breast implants. This incision will be closed using either dissolvable or non-dissolvable sutures, based on the technique and your surgeon’s preferences. A dressing will be applied, which must remain in place until your post-operative appointment with a MYA nurse at your local clinical hub.

Breast Enlargement Aftercare: What to Expect
We’re right here with you every step of the way.
The First Few Days
Patients should expect bruising and swelling around the breasts and surrounding areas, as well as tightness, discomfort, and sensitivity following the procedure. Pain typically subsides within 7 to 14 days, and pain relief will be prescribed to manage any discomfort.
Recovery from a boob job usually takes around 6 to 8 weeks, with the final results becoming visible after up to one year. Initially, the breast implants may sit quite high on the chest, but over time they will gradually drop and soften - often described as “dropping and fluffing.”
Your Post Op Bra
MYA recommends the Macom4MYA Post Op Bra, available from Seraphina Lingerie as a pack of two. As you'll wear your post-op bra day and night for several weeks, having two makes recovery simpler and more comfortable. Your MYA team will let you know when to order yours before surgery, so everything is ready for your recovery.
In some cases, surgeons may recommend wearing a breast band or strapping over the post-op bra to encourage dropping and fluffing and to provide additional support. It is essential to follow your surgeon’s personalised aftercare plan carefully.
What to Expect During Recovery
Scarring is a natural part of breast augmentation surgery and nothing to worry about. Scars will fade and become less noticeable over time as you heal. Typically healed between 6-8 weeks but can take up to 1 year to fade.
Most patients can return to work after around one week, or as advised by their surgeon.
After surgery, heavy lifting and strenuous exercise are not recommended for 6 - 8 weeks. It’s important to take things slowly to avoid causing the implants to shift or rupture.
Types of Breast Enlargements: Breast Implant Options
Every patient’s breast enlargement journey is unique. Our specialist breast augmentation surgeons will recommend the best implant size and placement based on your physical requirements, body shape, existing breast tissue, and desired result.
Size
Breast implants are measured in cubic centimetres (cc), not cup size, for example, 350cc implants. Check out our breast implant size guide.
Shape
Breast implants come in two main shapes: round and anatomical (sometimes called teardrop). Each gives a slightly different look.
Placement
Implant placement refers to whether the implant is positioned under the muscle, over the muscle, or partially between both. These are known as submuscular, subglandular, and subfascial placements respectively.
Profile / Projection
This is how much the breast implant projects forward when you’re standing. Options include low, moderate, high, or ultra-high profile.
Understanding Breast Implant Placement
The breast implant can be positioned under the muscle, above the muscle, or partially between both (dual plane).
Submuscular (under the muscle)
The implant is placed underneath the muscle, which helps reduce the risk of rippling and capsular contracture. It also provides a smoother contour from the clavicle to the nipple. This placement is often recommended for patients with little breast tissue who require extra support for a natural, smooth look.
Subglandular (over the muscle)
A popular choice among patients, as recovery tends to be less painful. This option is usually recommended for those with sufficient breast tissue to fully cover the implant.
Subfascial (between the layers)
The implant is placed between the connective tissue (fascia) covering the muscle. This helps reduce the risk of rippling and prevents a prominent implant profile, as the muscle movement softens the overall appearance of the breast.
It’s all about what feels right for your body and your desired outcome. Your surgeon will explain your options, so you’re informed, comfortable, and totally in control of your decision.
What Breast Implants do MYA use?
At MYA, we use only the highest quality implants from Mentor, a company owned by Johnson & Johnson and recognised as one of the world’s most trusted manufacturers.
